Fangirls & Our Projects

The definition of fangirl (according to Google) is a girl or woman who is an extreme or enthusiastic fan of someone or something. I think it’s fair to say that many of us, no matter the gender, fangirl over a handful of things. It just can’t be explained! Whichever thing or person that ends up tugging at our heartstrings, it becomes a part of us! It shapes how passionate we are about said thing or person, & in some cases, helps us become great marketers without even realizing it.

I couldn’t tell you the exact year I saw fan projects come to life, but it was peak One Direction days, that’s for sure. As my sister began her own fangirl journey over 5 boys from overseas, I witnessed one of the greatest teams the world has ever seen come together with such ease. With each passing year, every album release, tour, whatever it was; these fans were fueled by the love they had for these boys & nothing else. I don’t think we’ll ever know who exactly began these projects, but Directioners (One Direction fans) were the first non rehearsed crowd participation projects I witnessed, & later, was very much a part of…

My Introduction to Project Conditions

The wind is piercing on this particular Saturday night in Anaheim, California as my aunt & I make our way through the parking lot of The Honda Center. We’ve been counting down the days to this show & the time is finally here! We’re about to see Justin Timberlake on his ‘Forget Tomorrow’ World Tour. We stop in front of the jumbotron outside the venue for pictures. It’s a key part of what I call my fangirl tradition(s) to take a picture of the shows flyer as it flashes on the screen. Otherwise, how else will everyone on social media know where I am for the night? Hehe. We waited patiently watching the screen change & were greeted by a bright yellow sign that read, “JUSTIN U R LOVED UNTIL THE END OF TIME. PROJECT CONDITIONS X HONDA CENTER.” I quickly snapped a picture before it changed & I thought to myself, “Is this… Is this a fan project?”

After having a Suit & Tequila we walked around the Honda Center to do our usual rounds; merch, photo ops, & drinks. All around the venue I noticed pull up banners with lyrics…. That all just so happened to be the same color & font as the flyer outside… “I think there’s a fan project going on tonight!” I told my aunt as I began to explain what exactly a fan project was.

I hadn’t seen anything via social media in regard to a fan project for Justin’s shows, but the algorithm can’t be trusted no matter what social app you use… Shortly after finding our seats, a woman approached us with a huge stack of flyers & simply said, “Take one, pass it down, read it, thank you!” Simple & straight to the point! I’m not gonna lie… I took a few BUT for my defense, I scrapbook so I had to!

The sign read at the bottom, “HOLD THIS UP AT THE END OF UNTIL THE END OF TIME AND KEEP IT UP UNTIL JUSTIN SINGS SELFISH. @PROJECTCONDITIONS

As Justin finished up Until the End of Time, yellow signs appeared throughout the arena & best of all, Justin noticed. He gave the crowd a look of awe as he fully took in the moment. With his guitar around his neck he slowly turned in each direction, giving every side of the arena his attention to fully embrace the view. He smiled a grateful smile as he raised his arms to praise the crowd, he approached the mic & said, “C’mon! I love you guys so much!” Showing the crowd his heart hands, it was definitely a moment.

“Alright, so I’ll take those signs as a ‘Y’all are still having a great time out there?'” Only to have the crowd respond with a loud cheer. It had been so long since participating in a fan project. The feeling of how fun it can be, to show love to our fave in unison rushed back to me with such familiarity. I loved every second of it & clearly, Justin did too.

Speaking to The Project Conditions Crew

As I was leaving the venue that Saturday night in Anaheim, I looked up Project Conditions on social media. Their Instagram read “Project Conditions is a fan-led movement for JT.” The link in their bio sent visitors to a google drive so they can print their own sign(s) for the show they attend. There were leaders for each city, along with photos & videos of past shows. Even members of *NSYNC, Jessica Biel (Justin’s wife), & Justin’s mom Lynn were pictured holding these signs. It was wonderful!! As soon as my Palm Springs tickets were locked in, I inquired about meeting up with the Project Conditions crew. I just had to speak to the fans that orchestrated it all.

The Project Conditions crew is made up of 9 leaders, with the crew varying per city. I was able to meet up with the crew on January 20th in Palm Springs after the show. I observed them as they gathered near the box office taking pictures & handing out freebies which consisted of bracelets & photo strips of JT. The crew was simply taking a moment to bond & enjoy the fruits of their labor after another successful show.

Initially, all of this began because of a conversation in Vancouver. “A couple of our friends […] went to the first [Justin Timberlake] show in Vancouver, they actually ran into some of Justin’s team at the airport & had a conversation. From that conversation they had a realization that Justin was in a position where he needed to feel more love,” Adriana states. And thus, Project Conditions was created.

Before the PC crew came to be, member Ale was inspired by the fans of BTS, a Korean boyband, who took it upon themselves to celebrate bandmate Jin’s birthday with a poster campaign during a show. From there, fans who eventually became members of the PC crew, decided that would be a wonderful way to celebrate JT every night. Little did they know, that those yellow signs would have such a big impact, going further than they’d ever imagined!

The phrase that was chosen is a spin on JT’s “Until the End of Time,” written in a distinct font on yellow signs, almost appearing like fireflies within the audience for JT to see every night. The first show was such a success that fans started to inquire through social media about how they can participate via their own upcoming show. From there, the PC crew took over Justin’s upcoming dates. From getting a fan funded billboard in his hometown of Memphis, to having The Honda Center of Anaheim collaborate alongside the crew, that was just the beginning!

As of late, thanks to the added tour dates, viral clips of bandmates appearing at shows, & JT showing love to Los Angeles; the infinite love for JT is very much alive & well. So what’s next for PC you might ask? Adriana states, “The sky is the limit. All of my dreams came true last year, it’s the beginning of 2025, I’m super optimistic.”

After seeing this project come to life, being able to be a part of it twice, & speak to these wonderful fangirls I could only agree more. Thanks to social media (& hopefully you reading this article), I hope Project Conditions only continues to grow. I am truly looking forward to being a bigger part of it next tour.
